Conditionals
Understanding conditional sentences in English Grammar
What are conditional sentences?
Conditional sentences structure themselves around the likelihood of events unfolding. There exist four primary types: zero, first, second, and third conditionals. Zero conditional states general truths, first conditional addresses real possibilities, second conditional contemplates unreal or improbable situations in the present or future, and third conditional reflects upon unreal scenarios in the past
Explication in French:
Les phrases conditionnelles se construisent en fonction de la probabilité des événements. Il existe quatre types principaux : le zéro, le premier, le deuxième et le troisième conditionnel. Le zéro conditionnel énonce des vérités générales, le premier conditionnel aborde les possibilités réelles, le deuxième conditionnel envisage des situations irréelles ou improbables dans le présent ou le futur, et le troisième conditionnel reflète des scénarios irréels dans le passé.
Examples:
- Zero Conditional: If you heat ice, it melts. (General truth)
- First Conditional: If it rains tomorrow, I will bring an umbrella. (Real possibility)
- Second Conditional: If I were rich, I would travel the world. (Unreal or unlikely situation in the present/future)
Common Mistakes
When making sentences with "if", watch out for some common mistakes. For example, in sentences like "If I was you," it's better to say "If I were you." Remember to put a comma after starting with "if," like "If it rains, I will bring an umbrella."
